A gift that will last forever!
Gift giving has always been my top love language and now that we’re in that season of gifts and celebration, I couldn’t be more excited. I love giving Christmas presents! I love trying to find ways to give thoughtful and meaningful gifts to the people around me.
And honestly, this is what Christmas is all about. A lot of people believe the practice of gift giving came from the three wise men who brought their gifts to the newborn Jesus. And while that could be very well true, I believe the tradition of gift giving truly comes from the manifestation of the greatest gift ever given to us, Christ the Savior.
As we’re in this year of gift giving and presents, it’s exciting to make a list of all the things we want, but that’s just it. They’re all just things. Earthly gifts don’t last. No matter how much it cost, no matter how priceless it is, it will not last forever. But the gift of Jesus, who was given to us wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger, is a gift that will last for eternity.
Jesus is the fulfillment of all our needs and the joy and contentment of all our desiring.
Below is a non extensive list of some of the ways that Christ is the ultimate gift and as you read through them, I would encourage you to ponder them and thank and praise the Lord for each one.
- Jesus our shepherd
Just as a shepherd boy has to guard and protect the lives of his sheep and would lay down his life for them, so does the Lord love us so much that He guards and protects us and laid down His life to save us from our sin. The Lord our shepherd kindly and tenderly guides us along into right paths where there is protection and nourishment. Just as sheep, we can do nothing for ourselves but the Lord willingly guides us along doing everything for us. ( John 10:14-15 )
- Jesus our peace
Peace is not a feeling you muster up inside or being in a pleasant condition, such as the world offers, but is found in one place, one person, Jesus Christ who is peace. Christ gives us peace, (Himself), a peace that passes all understanding even in the most difficult of situations. He is the one who calms the turmoil in our lives, quiets the crashing waves upon our souls and guides us to places of true, lasting peace. (John 14:27)
- Jesus our hope
In 1 Timothy 1:1 Paul describes Christ a “our hope.” He didn’t only come to bring us hope, He is our living hope! He paid the great price and died for our sin, was buried, and rose from the grave for our justification, where He now sits at the right hand of the Father making intercession on our behalf. Jesus is our sure hope as it is in Him we find our security. Our world continues to decay and change around us yet we live for the things that are eternal. And this is or sure hope, that we will one day be resurrected to live forever with Christ in heaven . (1 Peter 1:3-5)
- Jesus our rock
Jesus is our rock and mighty fortress. He is our shelter and dwelling place. He is the answer to all those who cry out for deliverance. When we build our lives on Him, we don’t have to worry or fear the storms and trials of life that come at us. As He is there to strengthen and help us when the waves crash around us. (Psalm 18:46)
Jesus Christ, The Prince of Peace, The Messiah, The everlasting Father, The wonderful Counselor is the ultimate gift! In Him is where we find everything that we need (2 Peter 1:3) He is our peace, our joy, our hope, our sanctifier, our shepherd, our rock, our assurance, or physician, our captain, our forerunner, our comfort, our pleasure, our friend, our life, our defender, our bridegroom, our strength, our chief cornerstone, our tree of life, our mediator, our truth, our sword, our judge, our rest, our master. He is the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, He is our living water that quenches all our thirst, He is the Bread of Life, the One who satisfies our every hunger.
This Christmas season as you receive presents and enjoy this season with friends and family, I would encourage you not to neglect the most precious, most valuable, ultimate, free gift of Jesus Himself.
Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.“
“The greatest Christmas gift ever given wasn’t placed under the tree, He was placed on the tree and His name is Jesus.” – Unknown
