Secret to Surrender

Lately I’ve been searching out what true daily surrender looks like and how to implement it into my own life. When I first thought of surrendering to God I just saw it as a one time sort of thing, and yet as I’ve been on this quest to discovering the secret to surrender the Lord has revealed some precious things to me that I’d love to share with you.

Discovered Secret 1: Surrender isn’t a one time deal thing that we choose to make only once. Surrender is a day by day, moment by moment choice.

The enemy is constantly trying to seek our attention and invade our minds with fear and doubts and get our attention away from God.

When we surrender, we are giving up our control and saying, “God, I don’t have the strength or capabilities to do this, so please take over.” When we choose to give up our worries and stop depending on our own strength is when we come to a full dependence on God and let Him wield His strength.

I found it interesting that surrender in Greek is the word paradidomi which is defined as: to yield, to give up, entrust, to deliver or to transmit. If we want to live surrendered lives we need to yield, give up, and entrust our will to His which we will then discover true joy and peace.

Discovered Secret 2: Luke 9:23, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” When we choose to deny ourselves we are surrendering to our self-will and are in acceptance to His perfect will.

I’ve discovered that, if I want to live an authentic, surrendered, Christian life I must settle to resist myself. Denying self lets God sanctify us and conform us into His likeness.

Denying self is not an easy task and is a lifelong cross we are challenged to bear. This is why Jesus said to take up our cross daily. This means it’s a daily surrender and a daily decision of self-denial. The choice to follow Christ is a daily choice.

Everyday we can make the choice to give it all to God and say “not my will but yours” or we can choose self. There is so much freedom when we choose to surrender to God! When our lives are completely surrendered daily to Him we will find freedom, contentment, peace and rest.

When you choose to surrender all to Jesus, you are placing your trust in Him. When our hands are fully open and we no longer have them in fists is when all is released. All the worry, confusion, and turmoil is swapped for His peace.

It is when we “trust in the Lord with all our hearts, leaning not on our own understanding, but in all our ways acknowledge Him and He will direct our path.” Proverbs 3:5-6.

None of us ever surrenders once. On this side of heaven we will never stop surrendering because it is not a one time deal, but a moment by moment process. It is a commitment to a lifestyle. Each day will bring us new chances to surrender to God and let something go in our lives.

What might be holding you back from surrendering to God?

What changes in your thinking might need to happen for you to completely surrender all to God?

It’s my prayer that you would live a life surrendered to God, and realize that it is a day by day process, that when we come before the Lord and lean upon His strength, we find total peace and rest.

One does not surrender a life in an instant. That which is lifelong can only be surrendered in a lifetime.” – Elizabeth Elliot
