This morning as I was participating in a weekly prayer meeting, we were asked what each of our favorite attributes of God was. I mentioned His immutability meaning the fact He is a never changing God and it got me thinking.
In a world where everything is disordered and changes consistently, I am reminded how comforting the fact is that I serve a God who never changes. On this earth seasons change, people change, thoughts and perspectives change, countries rise and fall, yet God remains the same.
In Malachi 3:6 God said, “For I am the Lord, I do not change.” God will never be less than He is now. His very being, or attributes as we call them, have always and are always the same. This means He has no beginning or no end. He is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent. Meaning He is a God of all- knowing, He is a God with all- power, and He is a God who is all- present. He is not only that but He is also infinite, eternal, all- wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness and truth, and faithfully loving.
One of my favorite hymns is by Thomas Obadiah Chisholm. In it there is a line that says, “Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not, as thou hast been thou forever wilt be.” His faithfulness to us is great and unchanging, His counsel and wisdom.
If God is a an unchangeable God that means His Word is unchanging. This is so encouraging as then we can trust in His Word as it was written thousands of years ago and will live on forever as it always has. In Isaiah 40:8 it says, “The grass whithers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.” God’s Word is as a rock, firm, a unchangeable foundation.
Since God is our unchanging Father, we can trust in Him. In Hebrews it says, “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” We can fully trust in Jesus and place our hope in Him because He will keep His character and continue to carry- out His promises always.
God’s unchanging character is our constant. When the world is in chaos and around us is change and uncertainty, God is still the same. If we fix our eyes on Him constantly and stand firm on His promises, He will remain true and faithful. Whatever happens to us and in our life, Jesus is unchanging.
If we took the time to ponder it, we would realize that it is God’s immutability that is our foundation and what we put our trust in. It will guarantee us that God is truly the same yesterday, today and forever. It means that whatever He has said in His Word is in fact true and applies to us even today. It is what makes us stand strong and firm in Him. It gives us hope and purpose. We may live in a world that continues to change but we serve a God who will never change!
“God’s word is absolutely true. You may not understand how God is going to bring about what He’s promised you, but He is keeping every promise that He has ever made. He will never deceive you or disappoint you, and He will never change His mind about what He’s told you.” – Charles Stanley
